Before we even set foot inside a suspected haunted location, we need to know a few things. Most people tend to put ghosts, spirits & poltergeists into one broad category, normally under ghosts, but this umbrella term is not strictly correct. This article is intended to be a quick primer for those ghost hunters or paranormal investigators that are just starting out out in this fascinating field. In this article we will take a look at the subtle differences between ghosts, spirits and poltergeists to try to help us determine what type of haunting, if any, we as ghost hunters are investigating.

Most civilizations have their own beliefs of the afterlife and to best illustrate this we can refer to a opinion poll undertaken in 2004. The poll conducted by the Opinion Dynamics Corporation showed that 34 percent of Americans believe in ghosts, 92 percent believe in God and another 34 percent believe in UFOs.
