The interest for Spiritualism in the 1920s had declined, it did however have a large impact on the serious exploration of paranormal claims. Magicians of the day had been thrust into the new role of checking / debunking paranormal claims due to their extensive knowledge of deception and sleight of hand. This role still continues today with famous personalities like James Randy, Derren Brown and Penn & Teller, to name just a few.

Most civilizations have their own beliefs of the afterlife and to best illustrate this we can refer to a opinion poll undertaken in 2004. The poll conducted by the Opinion Dynamics Corporation showed that 34 percent of Americans believe in ghosts, 92 percent believe in God and another 34 percent believe in UFOs.
